Precision Resume Solutions - Clair Levy

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in career development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Clair Levy, Founder of Precision Resume Solutions, located in Thousand Oaks, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Resume writing business targeting Senior Managers, Directors, V.P., and C-Suite individuals looking to create or revise their career documents.

Tell us about yourself

I am a 2x certified resume writer with over 15-year experience in the career transition industry. I started in this industry after being laid off from my company and given career transition services. After being exposed to that environment, I knew this was my calling. I started working at Lee Hecht Harrison and left in 2021 to create my own resume writing business. Helping people articulate how amazing they are and seeing how that builds their confidence is so gratifying.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was working with a developer to create my website. It is still a work in progress, but we put a lot of work into it, and I think it turned out pretty well.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a solopreneur, I have to do everything myself. Identify and learn how to use all the tools of the trade, market my business, stay current on industry trends, and convince clients to work with me. That's just the business side. Then there is the creative process of writing resumes for clients. It can be overwhelming at times, but I've been taking it step by step, and if I haven't mastered something like a new program, social media, creating digital courses, etc. I don't beat myself up about it. I'm happy if I can earn a living and help others.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire a virtual assistant and train him/her/they on how to help you.
  2. Don't go overboard when purchasing tools for your business. Try free versions to see if they will work, and ask others for recommendations. I've purchased many things I haven't taken advantage of...yet.
  3. Set boundaries with your time and clear expectations with your clients, so you aren't taken advantage of and save time for yourself.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

To become a solopreneur, you have to be willing to work on your business and do your craft. If you enjoy working from home, learning new things, solving problems, and working with clients, then starting your own business, especially a service business where you are trading your time for money, is a good choice.
