Ready-to-eat & Made With Love - Cindy Fung
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cindy Fung, founder of Caviar Citizen Inc. - Sixteen Ounce, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Caviar Citizen Inc. is a Lifestyle & Hospitality Group with two main brands:
Sixteen Ounce prepared meals company, omakase-style/no menu, easy to eat healthy foods that are delivered to your door by subscription or pre-order. We have a lot of athletes, health and wellness advocates, families, busy entrepreneurs, new moms, couples who order from us.
Preserve Indulgence: Event Design & Boutique Catering, corporate, private clients, foodies, birthday, event planners, couples (for weddings)
Tell us about yourself
I'm from Windsor, ON. It was difficult growing up with high expectations from an Asian family. I ran away from my family to start my business because I wanted to make something of myself without their permission. Art, feelings, and moments motivate me to bring experiences and visuals.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing our prepared meals company during a pandemic. We went from 6 meals to now an average of almost 800 meals per week! I still remember the days I used to design, code, do socials/ads, submit orders, cook, pack the meals, pick up inventory, balance the numbers, do customer service, and deliver all over the GTA (it was free delivery at the time too...). But now, I have a very strong and amazing team who are also thriving with me to grow.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Surviving and growing from the constant changes would be the overall biggest achievement because it can be physically, mentally, and spiritually exhausting.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Don't do it if you're in it for the money. Don't do it if you don't have a passion for your product. Don't ask friends to support you. Just keep doing it for yourself and see your journey roll.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Mistakes will happen but understand that you are the human behind a business. Be real and true to yourself while having fun with your work. Don't get lost in the sauce!
