What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm Christina Straw, owner of Christina Straw Photography. I specialize in photographing families and children, and my clients are families primarily in Denver and South Denver.
Tell us about yourself
After working in corporate communications for 10+ years, I was getting burnt out and decided to go to art school to study photography. I started my business in 2009 after the birth of my son and have been capturing families ever since! I love capturing the emotional connection between parent and child and photographing the special connection my clients have with their families.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
To have a successful business that's been going strong for 15 years. My biggest accomplishment is having repeat clients trust me with their family photos year after year. It's the biggest compliment, and I love seeing their children grow!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I try to treat every customer as if it's my first time shooting. I never want to rest on my laurels. The hardest thing is a work/life balance, especially in the fall, as it's my busiest time. I want to make sure I can give my best to my clients as well as my family.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Don't give up; look for someone's work you admire and see if you can do a mentor session with them to learn about the business. Some of the biggest mess-ups will teach you so much about yourself, how you persevere and how to grow from the experience. And most importantly, have fun!
