Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christina Carlyle, a holistic nutritionist, and trainer, based in Dallas, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a holistic nutritionist and trainer that offers weight loss and wellness programs and workouts for women that will get them healthy using a science-backed strategy that works 3x faster.
Tell us about yourself
I got into nutrition and training to help overcome my own personal struggles with health and weight. Nobody could help me navigate my unique health issues, so I got my own education and multiple certifications in the process. I noticed I lost weight significantly faster, addressing my health issues and weight at the same time. I lost 30 pounds in 60 days, and people were asking how I did it. So I started working with them, and they had great success, too. Then I got in a car accident and couldn't train one-on-one for a while. So I started a website and a youtube channel, and my real business was born.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Leveraging the internet and technology to automate my business fully and to scale to help more than 20,000 people. I'd never have helped that many people without technology or the web.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Dealing with nonstop algorithm changes on Google and social media platforms. You never know what's coming next, and your traffic, reach, and income can drop overnight without warning.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Just start. Thinking won't get you the experience you need. Doing it will. Also, do not copy someone that you "think" is successful. I see so many cookie-cutter coaches and biz owners using the same style, fonts, and content over and over. You need to stand out and be original. You also never know if someone's actually successful. I know people with hundreds of thousands of followers and pretty websites that are broke. Your business will never work the same as someone else's, and copying someone doesn't mean you'll be successful. I'd also recommend building your business on your own website or app. Not one with a third-party platform or social platforms exclusively. If you get hit with an algorithm change or get blacklisted, you could lose reach and revenue instantly. I've seen this happen so many times to people I know with hundreds of thousands of followers, and they have devastating losses. Always own your own content and diversify your marketing approaches.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Having your own business is rewarding and provides the freedom that a job could never give you. You can be crazy successful.
