Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Christian Nwosu, Owner of Christian Nwosu Photography, located in Waldorf, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a wedding photographer. My customers are couples who value photos, and the most important aspect of their wedding day is the gathering of their closest family and friends.

Tell us about yourself

I received my first camera as a child. I am an army brat, and growing up I moved every 2-3 years. My mom purchased my first camera so that I could take photos of my friends and surroundings to remember the things I loved about each location. I am motivated by legacy and the desire to capture not only beautiful photos but to capture each wedding with truth as moments unfold before my eyes.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Freedom to be present for my family. When I worked as a nurse, I was bound by the hours of my schedule. It was difficult to get off work, I missed holidays with my family, and if my children's school called, I was frantic about how to leave work and pick them up. Entrepreneurship has allowed me to be more present and show up for my family in more ways than I could before.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The learning curb of loving what you do (taking photos) and running the business side of things is very challenging. I have learned to outsource, which gives me more time to focus on what I love.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be authentic, and run your business in a way that feels good to you. This will allow you to attract people who genuinely appreciate your time and talent.
  2. Do not allow your mistakes to paralyze you. Mistakes will happen! Learn and keep going.
  3. Commit yourself to be a lifelong learner in your craft. It's impossible to know it all. Even when you feel like you have mastered it, continue to invest in education and resources to serve your clients even better!
