Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in publication but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chris Kelley, Author of The Last Delivery Driver, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an author of a futuristic, sci-fi thriller based in Houston, Texas. The story is set ten to twenty years in the future, in 2029 and 2039. My customers are not just readers who enjoy character-driven speculative fiction. I also have an online e-commerce shop called Space City Boutique that features merchandise from the story, along with apparel, as I like to say–that's out of this world–like t-shirts, accessories, stickers, and sweaters.

Tell us about yourself

The idea and origin story of the Last Delivery Driver dates back to 2016. I was working on a food delivery start-up that I founded called Spoonr, imagining what it would be like to deliver in the future. Fascinated with the new technologies of rideshare, automated vehicles, and the rise of on-demand platforms, I imagined a future where drones, AI, and robotics had overtaken many societal roles.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

While it was an incredible feat to get the story published and sell copies of the book, I'd have to say the most significant accomplishment was establishing my process of becoming a writer. I've journaled every day since embarking on this journey. I've taken classes. Worked with mentors and coaches and invested heavily in the art of becoming a better storyteller and communicator. It's something I can take with me in all aspects of my career.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Juggling how to spend your time and managing your resources. The two seem inextricably linked, so striking a balance is the key to getting anywhere.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Prioritize:

  1. Your family and community.
  2. Your health.
  3. Finding mentors and helpers.
