Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kai Wong, pastry chef, and owner of Chocorrant Patisserie, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Chocorrant Patisserie stands out as an Artisan Croissant and Cake Cafe. We take twists on the classical French Croissant to incorporate unique dessert-inspired flavours such as Strawberry Cheesecake and Molten Salted Egg Yolk. Cake Lovers are in for a treat with a selection of layered Opera style cakes.
Tell us about yourself
After Culinary school and working in the industry for 10+ years, I learned making desserts and baking were a passion of mine. The skills I developed turned into a custom cake business, and eventually, Chocorrant came to fruition in 2017. For anyone that loves food, having the ability to turn any idea into reality and watching people enjoy what you create is the most worthwhile.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a new business owner, my biggest accomplishment is just managing to stay open and running during the pandemic. Learning to pivot and change, adapting to the circumstances, while managing a team through it all felt like an accomplishment in itself.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Ultimately everything falls on you. You have to know the ins and outs of your business the operations, accounting, marketing, everything.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Build a good team of like-minded people.
- Don’t worry if things don’t start off right. There’s always a learning curve.
- Stay optimistic.
