Creating sweet moments - Chocolata
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with May Houri, founder of Chocolata, located in Blainville, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I create sweet moments! My business is all about creating happiness in people's lives. Celebrating your special moments like birthdays, baby showers, weddings, etc. with cake and desserts. The best part of what I do is my client base ranges from newborns all the way to the elders. I don't think there should be an age requirement when celebrating your special moments.
Tell us about yourself
I started my business while I was on maternity leave for my third baby. I really wanted to stay home with my kids, so I thought that being an entrepreneur was the way to go. It's been 10 years now and I wouldn't change anything. It took a lot of perseverance to get where I am. And my kids are my biggest cheerleaders. They love what their mom does and are so proud when they tell their friends. Needles to say they are my motivation. Being my own boss also allows me to grow as a person, as an individual, as well as spiritually.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Opening my store front during a pandemic.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Making sure sales are coming in, especially having a storefront. It was easier when I was working from home. Now that I have extra rent to pay, it makes it stressful making sure your sales are able to pay it.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
1- Motivation to keep going. Whatever stress that comes through, know that it will pass and that you will get through it.
2- Dealing with clients can burn you out, just don't let it. At first, you'll take everything personally. Learn to grow from that and it's just business. If you need to break up with a client to keep your sanity, do it. Don't think twice if your gut speaks to you and you know it would be the right move.
3- Don't let anyone around you tell you different from what your dreams are. People that are supposed to be your support, will not and that's ok. Make sure YOU support YOU.
Anything else you'd like to share?
Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart and will require to change directions constantly. What I thought I wanted 10 years ago when I first started, isn't what I want now. And that's ok. Dreams change, take a turn, expand, or retreat to something else. Just know that you are on the right path.
