Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chivas Miller, instructor at D1scovered Training, LLC, located in Tulsa, OK, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a basketball training company that helps kids D1scover, Dedicate, and Dominate the game both mentally and physically.

Tell us about yourself

I am a Native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, where I grew up playing basketball and graduated from Southside High School in 2003. I then went on to play college basketball at Bacone College from 2003–2008, where I had a career-high of 41 points against Central Baptist College in Conway, Arkansas. I went on that year to become an all-conference second-team selection and academic All-American. In the summer of 2008, I was selected to be a part of the NBA D-League (now known as the G-League) Pre-Draft basketball camp in Atlanta, Georgia. I never got an opportunity to play in the G-League, but in 2011 I signed a contract to play professionally in Ultimate Basketball League (UBL) with the Tulsa Tornadoes. After only playing for one season, I decided to start training the youth and helping them take their game to the next level.

Here are some notable names that I have trained with:

  • Ryan Humphrey - NBA (Retired and now a Notre Dame Assistant Coach)
  • Toni Young - WNBA (Retired)
  • Haleigh Lankster - Overseas (Retired)
  • Leah Smith - Overseas
  • Pooh Williams - Former G League Player
  • Damion Hooks - Overseas
  • Imani Davis - Overseas
  • KC Ross-Miller - Overseas
  • Madit Tieny Dak - G League (Texas Legends)

AND THE LIST KEEPS GROWING........

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been being able to help kids and adults achieve their goals by playing the game they love.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is to expand my business into other areas. My goal is to make more connections in the region and across the country to help more kids grow in the game of basketball.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid to have a vision you believe in.
  2. Value yourself and hold others accountable for valuing you as well.
  3. Always have the plan to grow the business in the future, and don't be stagnant.
