Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly Kernen, owner of Chewie Boots Pet Care LLC., located in Appleton, WI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a team of professional in-home pet care providers. We go to people's houses to care for their pets while they are away. Anyone who stresses about taking their pet to a boarding facility has a hard time cleaning the yard after their dog, or would like some help training their dog, should contact us for help!

Tell us about yourself

I used to work as a Veterinary Technician. I got my degree and worked at the Ripon Veterinary Clinic for ten years. After having my 3rd child, working full time became challenging. That's what led to my decision to stay home with my son and find something I could do with him being with me. I would hear many stories at the clinic about animals not liking the boarding place, and I always wished I could go to their house and take care of their pets when they were gone. Working full time, I knew that wouldn't be possible. Once I stopped working at the clinic, I decided to start my own in-home pet care business. I love animals, and with my technical background, I can be certain to give them the proper care they deserve while they are home. Sometimes it's hard to want to get out and go take care of the pets, but I am motivated by the love I have for each pet to do the best job that I can.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is growing a team of hard-working sitters to help me be able to cover a larger area than just the town I live in. I currently have seven wonderful employees.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is keeping work and personal life separate. I want my clients to know that we are available for them whenever needed. But I do need to take breaks too.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You must be self-motivated to work even if you don't "want" to.
  2. Come up with a unique name for your business, one that people will remember after they hear or see it.
  3. Make sure you get the proper insurance, licensing, or certifications that you need to prove that you are a reputable business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I enjoy my job and look forward to seeing all the happy faces when I walk in the door! I wouldn't want to do anything else with the gifts that I have.
