Eliminate Disorganization & Disconnect - Cheryl Luther

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and career development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cheryl Luther, Founder of You Inc. Quarterly Method, located in Plymouth, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We help grow amazing people in amazing relationships! You Inc Quarterly Method helps couples get 100% on the same page, from understanding what really drives them and what they really want (individually and together) to how to plan for their goals to staying accountable and actually reaching their goals. The process is built on a rhythmic cycle that is broken down into quarters, or 90-day increments, hence the name Quarterly Method.

This program is perfect for two types of couples. One type is generally pretty happy in their relationship. They are interested in couples retreats and growing together on an ongoing basis. These couples are looking to find the next level of awesomeness together! Sometimes they are even brand new to each other and want to get off on the right foot. The other type of couple sees tremendous growth in a very short period of time. These couples typically have waves of good and not-so-good moments in their partnership; there might be some bickering or misunderstands, and things can feel a little stale. These couples may be on the verge of considering couples therapy.

I love working with both types of couples because this process meets you exactly where you are in your personal growth journey and elevates you to new heights. My favorite types of couples are those from underserved and marginalized communities, like the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities. I get them because I also fall outside of the norm, and I see them.

Tell us about yourself

This journey started many years ago when I failed miserably in my first attempt as an entrepreneur. I simply did not have the business skills needed to survive as a small business. I picked myself up by the bootstraps, and I took as many courses, read hundreds of books, found a few mentors, and eventually gained a robust set of skills to run a business. During that time, I worked in the corporate setting and further developed my skill set. I thought I had everything figured out. I had the world by the tail, or so I thought. My career was thriving, but it was obvious that my personal relationships stunk.

On a whim, I thought if all my business skills could create such a high level of success, what would happen if I applied them to my personal life? When I met my now wife, I had been slowly plugging away at developing the QM from my business tools, but only for my own personal development. One day I asked her if she would be interested in joining me for a session. She was blown away at how much we covered in such a short amount of time and how good she felt afterward. We have been doing the QM together as a couple ever since. :) There's no better feeling than to watch someone else find success and happiness and know I was there to guide them away from all the pitfalls that I already experienced. Coaching others excite and motivate me to be a better person every day, and I thrive when I can help others thrive!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Making a positive difference for others. There's no better feeling than to help another human who wants to better themselves and uplevel their own positive impact. I love being part of the ripple effect.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Staying disciplined and true to the game plan that has been created for the business. There are a lot of blinky, shiny objects out there ready to distract you and swindle your cash away. Just like with the QM, it's really important to create a plan, work the plan, then re-evaluate the plan on a consistent basis to make sure you are staying on the right track. Keeping the cycles short and consistent help me keep making micro-steps in the right direction. I'm not saying I'm perfect and that I've never faltered; what I am saying is having a game plan before distractions arise can significantly reduce problems.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find the intersection of what you are interested in and where there is a need. Following your passion is great, but your business needs to solve a problem that others want help with.
  2. Find a mentor who is already successful. Ask lots of questions and take their advice. There's no need for you to repeat the same mistakes that they have already made.
  3. Create your own EOS, or Operating Strategy, with a rhythmic meeting structure, goal planning, and accountability. A healthy Operating Strategy for business looks at several key areas: Vision, Data, People, Culture, Process, Conflict, and Meeting Rhythm.
