Grow, Eat, Share and Learn About Good Food - Cheryl Knecht

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cheryl Knecht, owner of Schoolhouse Kitchen + Studio, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Schoolhouse Kitchen + Studio is a cooking studio for kids and their families. We offer after-school cooking classes, camps, and parties for kids and adults.

Tell us about yourself

I was a stay-at-home mom when my kids were young, and we had so much fun cooking together. As they got older, I knew I wanted to continue cooking with kids and could turn my passion into a business to serve our community. I love seeing kids learn new skills that help build their confidence and self-reliance.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I was able to reimagine how the Schoolhouse served the community during the pandemic so that we could stay in business. We created cooking kits for families and hosted learning pods for local families that needed childcare support. Through key partnerships and creativity, our company grew and hired people during that time.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I find it difficult to prioritize my personal needs. There is always more that I want to create and do in the business, and laundry and exercise seem much less exciting!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire a good accountant to make sure you start everything correctly.
  2. Learn to rely on others and ask for help. You cannot do it all.
  3. Surround yourself with people you enjoy working with. It makes it much more fun!
