Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chantal Navratil, founder of Chem Baddie Cosmetics, LLC., located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Chem Baddie Cosmetics is a vegan, science-themed cosmetics company created for all races, genders, ages, and abilities! We celebrate the beauty in science, use high-quality ingredients, have sustainable packaging, and give 5% of all profits to the Association for Women in Science. Our customers want fun, affordable cosmetics that don't hurt the planet!

Tell us about yourself

I graduated with my Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering and am currently getting my Master's in Cosmetic Science. I always loved all things beauty and worked at SEPHORA for six years as a certified makeup artist. Working there, I saw brands either science-themed or fun and colorful. There were never brands that showcased the beauty in science, were affordable, and were sustainable. I created Chem Baddie Cosmetics to show that anyone can be in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and be beautiful.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is featuring someone in STEM every week. We call this our 'Baddie in STEM Spotlight.' I am so proud of this because there are many different areas of STEM, and it is really exciting to show that anyone can do it!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is learning that everyone does not have the same work style as you. Working with others and doing what is best for everybody can be the most challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Never take no for an answer! You will be told no many times before you will ever get a yes. Don't let that stop you from creating your vision and following your dreams.
  2. Stay true to your values. You will get many opinions and get a lot of feedback. Know your boundaries and what you want at the end of the day.
  3. Work hard, and don't failure deter you. Failure is only a learning experience.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?
