Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chef Larie Carlice, a Private Chef based in Portsmouth, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a catering and event planning business. My customers are companies, churches, and individuals.

Tell us about yourself

My uncle was a chef in the navy, and he would always include my sister and me in his kitchen activities at home. When I left home after high school graduation, friends would ask me to prepare meals, decorate for events, and refer me to their family and co-workers. The ease of everything coming together motivates me each day to do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Showing my children the success of having a passion for something, setting goals to achieve a dream, and following through with it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having to work around my “9-5” job.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set goals and celebrate them when you’ve accomplished them.
  2. Know your target customer base and nurture the repetitive customers.
  3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help operating the business. If you’re not good at bookkeeping, it’s ok to hire someone who has that skill… You don’t have to literally run the whole operation just because you’re the business owner.
