Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nikki Grossman, owner of Cheese Shoppe, located in Southampton, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a gourmet market & Cafe that has been a staple in Southampton Village since 1974. When I took over four years ago, I elevated the quality of the food and menu. We feature fresh, homemade, and healthy breakfast and lunch options. We use sustainably sourced and organic products wherever we can. We are known for our chopped salads, signature sandwich menu, and homemade soups. Our retail area is a carefully curated selection of artisan snacks, crackers, sweets, etc.

Tell us about yourself

I love being around food and providing sustenance to people. It is a nurturing feeling of happiness when someone loves what they have eaten. I had always gravitated toward food service, beginning with my first job in a Pork Store when I was 14 years old. I am fortunate to have a wonderful team, most of whom have been with me for many years. I also have a supportive following of customers that I have come to know and sincerely appreciate.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The long-standing relationships I have built over the years with both staff and customers. The experience of learning to manage people and a successful business is rewarding and invaluable in all aspects of life.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having to transition with things like the economy, labor shortages, and Pandemics. Balance of family and work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Have a good size rainy day fund. Hone in on your craft and what services/products your business is offering. Be patient, flexible, and open-minded. Take your time growing and expect the first 2-3 years as a learning curve.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Remember that hard work and perseverance will pay off but make sure you find happiness while doing it!
