Chatting Hockey Snacks with Seanna Thomas
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and nutrition, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Seanna Thomas of Hockey Snacks, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
What's your business and who are your customers?
Hockey Snacks helps young athletes, their teams, and families learn to fuel themselves for performance through workshops, programs, and coaching.
Tell us about yourself
I've been working as a nutritionist for over a decade. Many years ago, I took my then 7-year old son to a hockey practice at 7:00AM. After the practice, all the parents walked into the dressing room to find the players eating deep fried tortilla chips!
It was at that moment, I knew there was a gap in the market when it came to nutrition for young athletes and Hockey Snacks began!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was pivoting during the pandemic. Everything I did previously was in-person. Events, workshops, tournaments, you name it! I had to switch to completely virtual and now I am able to offer multiple programs, workshops, and products online.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is thinking you can do it ALL. Once I realized I had to delegate some tasks, everything became easier and my success grew.
What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First, just DO IT. You can research and plan forever, but just jump in and GO.
Second, surround yourself with people that will lift you up. You need cheerleaders in your corner because it's not always easy.
Lastly, delegate the tasks you hate or just simply aren't good at. Finances always brought me to my knees, but when I finally hired a bookkeeper, I felt like I could breathe. It's always worth it.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Being an entrepreneur is one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life. No one else in my family has done this and I didn't have a road map to follow. But I am so happy to be able to choose what I do, when I do it, and how I get things done.
I am home for my family, and I'm able to work from anywhere. There is no better feeling.
