What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is a unique, totally sugar-free bakery, including some items that are also gluten-free and/or low-carb, keto-friendly. Since 1988, Chatila's Bakery has been creating confections that are as delicious as they are good for you. Our products have the indulgent taste of a great dessert, without the large amount of calories, fat, and sugar that are typically found in sweets. Our products also don't have the bland, "Diet" taste and consistency of many other sugar-free, low-fat products. We're sure that if you try our baked goods- you will see for yourself how incredible they are!
Tell us about yourself
I am a doctor, and my Mother is what got me started in this business, as she was a diabetic with heart issues. Trying to find the right balance and taste for enjoyable desserts for her was my goal, and it was quite a challenge. Each day, my customers motivate me to keep bringing good-tasting, sugar-free products that they can incorporate into their lifestyle and not feel deprived. The smile on their face when they find out they can have sweets again and not affect their blood sugar makes me feel good about what I do.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am proud of the fact that I have taken this unique small business and stayed in business both in the United States and Canada for 35 years.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Building a good reputation, quality, and using high-standard ingredients.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- First, a good business plan.
- Second, a solid budget.
- Third, patience. As it takes time to grow a successful business, it does not happen overnight.
