Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brian Sutich, Founder of Chasing Sound, located in Newton, NJ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Chasing Sound, and I'm helping guitarists of all proficiencies get better on the instrument, along with creating a great place to hang out and learn about our obsession.
Tell us about yourself
I've been teaching guitar for as long as I can remember. I wanted to share my knowledge with more than just my in-person students, which motivated me to make Chasing Sound. I've met so many people and have been through so many big life events because of music, so that's what keeps me going.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
One of my biggest accomplishments is creating my newsletter - Six String Sunday Club, and having sent it out every single Sunday, collecting the best of the guitar world for over five years at this point!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Juggling other priorities and making sure you find enough time for your passion. In the midst of everything else going on with life, I found that it's important to be super intentional with my free time.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find the place where your people are - one of my favorite things I've done is create a Discord server - I've met and hung out with some great people each and every day. It's invaluable to have so many awesome people to discuss ideas with.
- Start an e-mail list - the e-mail list has brought me so many opportunities. Social media sites come and go, but your e-mail list is your bread and butter. Sub tip: don't feel bad about unsubscribes - people join and unsubscribe from e-mails all the time. They might be back later on, or they might not have been the right fit for you!
- Embrace your "competition" - rather than think with a mindset that makes every other online person in your field your competition, try and work with these people. I've found it goes way further to collaborate than to compete.
