Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daniel Scott, co-owner of Charmingtons Cafe, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We're a cafe, with breakfast, lunch, small bites, fresh pastries, and much more! Our customers are generally neighborhood folks. We're right in the center of the Charles Village, Remington, and Old Goucher neighborhoods of North Baltimore, so we get local folks, teachers, college students, and more.
Tell us about yourself
I joined Charmington's about a year after it first opened and became a partner about a year later. I love serving people delicious food, I love coffee, and I love creating a positive space to shop and work in!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We have a few big ones, but I would say continuing to operate during the pandemic has been our biggest accomplishment. It's been quite a challenge, but we've managed to stay safe and improve our shop in many ways.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of our main challenges now is the uncertainty that comes with the pandemic. Vendor prices have fluctuated quite a bit, and uncertainty is one of the hardest things about running a cafe like this.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be prepared for delays! Like I said earlier, the pandemic has caused a lot of uncertainty, and I find it best to be prepared for anything.
- Create a positive place for your employees, and it will translate to a positive place for your customers!
- Be honest and genuine about your product! It's very hard to sell a product you don't believe in yourself.
