Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bret Burchard, Co-Founder of ChampionShift, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

ChampionShift is a mindset training business helping athletes and coaches compete and lead with confidence, resilience, and humility.

Tell us about yourself

I have been coaching basketball since 2008 at the collegiate and professional levels, including ten years in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns. I am a second-generation coach, born in the gym and raised in the business. The two most influential men in my life were coaches, and I believe coaches play a critical role in the development of young people. But I have also experienced first-hand the challenges coaches face and the pressure that comes with the industry. My focus is to help coaches and athletes navigate the challenges and pressures they're facing so they can win big, leave a lasting impact, and enjoy the journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In the midst of the pandemic in 2020, I pivoted my focus on the business and wrote a book, and launched our core program, Catching Confetti, in just four months. "Catching Confetti" is a mindset training program for athletes and coaches. In its first three years of existence, the Catching Confetti Team Toolkit helped four different high school and college teams win championships.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The biggest challenge with starting a business is navigating the emotional day-to-day roller coaster and staying committed to it over the long run. You will feel like an imposter, a superhero, a failure, and an unstoppable all in the same week. And it will almost certainly take longer than you think to get it going. If you are a solopreneur, the business requires your attention every day to advance, so you have to sharpen your mindset daily to keep going in the midst of all these emotions.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get started. Publish today. You don't have to have your niche, logo, tagline, or entire business plan figured out before you start.
  2. Get feedback. Every time you publish work or interact with a client, pay attention to their feedback, direct and indirect. They will make your niche and marketing language clear by the language they use and the results they receive.
  3. Eyeballs and iterations. Repeat steps 1 and 2. Get eyeballs on your work and iterate until you find your sweet spot.
