Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Casey Ferrand McGee, Founder and Owner of CFM Media, located in New Orleans, LA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a media coach and consultant helping organizations grow their brands through effective storytelling and gaining earned media attention to grow their visibility and authority.

Tell us about yourself

I was a television news reporter for 14 years and saw firsthand how businesses and nonprofits struggled to get stories about their event or initiatives covered by their local news stations. During that time, I also became increasingly concerned about the negative and bad news we were continuing to share about the community. I started my business to start using my years of knowledge and news experience to support businesses with strategic communications planning and media outreach to support their PR needs and goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every time I succeed in getting my clients the news coverage and exposure they’re seeking, it brings me extreme joy. To see the immediate and direct results clients see through the work I do for them to earn them the media attention they deserve makes the work so rewarding. I love seeing them reach their goals and excel!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of growing my business is finding reliable and qualified talent to take on some of the tasks that can be more time-consuming and who are capable of doing the work at a standard that meets my expectations. Another hard part is staying committed to doing the work to build and grow my business because, without me, the business doesn’t exist.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get coaches or mentors who can guide you by giving the roadmap to follow. The right people can give you the shortcut to make the road easier.
  2. Invest in yourself and your business by growing your knowledge about business and your specific industry. You need to be a valued expert in your lane.
  3. Be present in your business and allow people to get to know you, your story, and what drives you. People aren’t just buying your product or service; they’re investing in YOU.
