Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in graphic design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Inessa Sage, Graphic Designer of Cauldron Press, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a book cover designer, formatter, and design educator. My customers are indie authors, mostly in the fantasy genre. My students are new designers who would like to start a cover design business and authors with a passion for digital art.
Tell us about yourself
Being an indie author myself, I started designing my own covers early on in my writing career. My education and background are in photography and digital design, so it made sense to create my own cover art. I noticed a lot of people were asking me for the name of my designer and decided to try my hand at cover design as a career. It was the best move I ever made! I absolutely love making books come to life and helping authors achieve their dreams of publishing.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have had a few accomplishments in this business. The main one has seen books I designed hit bestseller lists and win awards. My next big accomplishment has been starting Cauldron Press Academy, where I teach others the art and business of book cover design. It has been absolutely rewarding to see my students succeed in businesses they start after finishing my courses.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
My biggest tough point is staying in one lane. It is so easy as an entrepreneur to try new things since there are no limits to what you can do. There are always new ventures to attempt, new social media sites to sign up for, and new ways to market yourself. The list is endless. I find I have to keep myself on a regimented plan in order not to try and do everything. There are only so many hours in the day!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't talk yourself out of it. Running your own business can be daunting, but it can also be the best thing you'll ever do.
- Plan and budget your business like it is already a success before you even start it.
- Make peace with the fact that not every day will be the same and pivot when needed.
