Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David & Holly Pflugfelder, owners of CATHIS Farm, located in Lillington, NC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a small family farm in Lillington, NC, that raises pigs, chickens, cattle, turkeys, and lamb on pasture and hosts seasonal events sunflowers, corn maze, haunted attraction, and Christmas lights. Our purpose is to give back to our community by providing wholesome meat that has been humanely raised using regenerative farming practices on our farm and to bring families to the farm and experience the fun and excitement of the farm. The name CATHIS Farm was created from our children's names Caleb, Thor, and Isla; this is their farm that we are building for them.
Tell us about yourself
David came from a farming background, growing up on a farm in New Jersey. We first started out with a few laying chickens and 2-3 pigs. We grew our farm slowly over time as we were able to purchase additional land. Our motivation is that our kids have an appreciation of where their food comes from and the work that goes into producing it.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having the opportunity to teach our children about nature and how we can work together with nature to create healthy, delicious food for both our family and customers that trust us to feed their families.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being able to adapt to conditions that are outside our control. For example, when COVID hit, all our restaurants shut down. We had to adapt to be able to sell products in other ways by expanding our home deliveries.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Don't be afraid of failure. Learn from your mistakes and move on. Always look at the big picture and the future of your business when making decisions.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Diversify and have tried to have multiple revenue sources of income to keep your business going but remember to sit back and enjoy the small things too.
