Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in creative design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karen Kerski, Founder of Catalpha, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Catalpha is a graphic design firm specializing in packaging and POP for CPG clients like DAP, Biofreeze, and Mascot Snacks.

Tell us about yourself

From my childhood, I loved art and chose to pursue graphic design to be able to "create" every day. As a freshman designer, I learned how my creative efforts impact both the consumer and business. Design can influence and service consumers through the educational opportunity of the package. The package and POP have two purposes: driving retail success for the company and, most importantly, helping the end user solve an issue. Both parties benefit when packaging, and POP help the consumer purchase what they need and want.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment is the company's longevity. 36 years and counting. I still enjoy the work and am proud that I can name clients that have been with us for over 20 years. I am thankful for the knowledge and experience I gained from every client.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

To this day - firing and laying off employees. I avoided firing people to the detriment of the company - unhappy employees are bad apples in a basket, harming those around them and the business. The first time I laid anyone off was because of the pandemic.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do not reduce your quality standards, or you will harm your clients and your business.
  2. Understand enough about taxes, legal requirements, and accounting. No one cares as much as you do, nor risks as much.
  3. Know your competitors, know your company strengths and differentiators, and make all employees responsible for your client's happiness with your service/product.
