Interested in starting your own journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Diana Ries, Founder of Castleberry Farmers Market, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your organization, and who are your members?

We are a local, nonprofit, community farmers market. We support local farmers, food purveyors, and the community through the long-term sustainability of an easily accessed market within the Castleberry Hill community. Our diverse customers are between the age of 21-70. They generally live within 10 miles of our community. By accepting EBT, we are able to promote healthy, affordable eating habits to those in need.

Tell us about yourself

When I moved downtown to the Castleberry Hill neighborhood in 2017, I saw that we lived in a "food desert." If you didn't have a car or a bicycle or had any infirmity, access to healthy food was an issue. I joined Castleberry Hill Neighborhood Association and suggested we start a farmers market, and, well, that was the beginning. It took a lot of time and effort to get the market off the ground. There are required permits and a variety of organizations that must be contacted to get the market approved.

What's your biggest accomplishment as an organization?

We are proud of being able to help local businesses and farms survive through the pandemic.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being an organization?

You really need to wear "a lot of hats." And it can be very consuming. Sometimes it feels very 24/7.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow an organization today?

  1. Have a plan.
  2. Find a sponsor, or work with Small Business Administration for support.
  3. Narrow your focus: It's a good thing to be specialized.
