Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carrie Schechter, Founder of UnderWraps NYC & JukeBox NYC, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I turn high-performing go-getters into ruthless operators with their health & confidence, not just their business. After creating multiple 6-figure companies, I realized that I and my entrepreneurial friends needed to include a few central stepping stones that kept us from elevating to the next level in both business and personal life.
Many of my peers told me they started to lack confidence in their image. It wasn’t about losing weight per se. It was about feeling strong and having the energy and vitality to accomplish what they dreamed of. When you think your health or appearance lets you down, feeling a sense of dishonesty about who you are, it stops you from showing up fully. This brings upon feelings of being stuck and will hinder your progress. We quickly forget that we do not have to compromise our greatest asset, our health, to create a thriving career—the more substantial the founder, the stronger the business.
After spending 20 years as a successful celebrity & advertising photographer, I had already begun working as a coach at the top boxing clubs in NYC. In 2019, I decided to open the first woman-owned boxing Club in Brooklyn, NYC, named Jukebox NYC. We won Best Boxing Club in Brooklyn by Dime Bank in 2021 and Best Boxing Instruction in NYC in 2022.
The pandemic shifted all of our lives, leading me to create my newest and ultimate new baby: UnderWraps NYC, a fully online Boxing & Personal Development Program using my Proven Method guaranteed to fast-track busy go-getters to upgrade their image dramatically by learning how to take the skills they already have in business, and hijack them for their health, vitality, & confidence! I help go-getters to break free of destructive patterns - and arm them with newfound effective strategies for inside and outside the ring.
I’m proud to say I’ve helped 1,000s of people over the last 15 years become top operators of their life through boxing, accountability, an easy-to-implement personalized plan, community, and support. You can’t find anything this effective and enjoyable anywhere else.
Tell us about yourself
I was fortunate to face massive amounts of adversity, from being houseless to fighting my way out of harsh circumstances. I lived on the streets with nothing to my name. Yet, through perseverance, mental stamina, and a positive attitude, I rose to the top of each field I entered.
Thankfully, adversity taught me who I am and who I can be and gave me unbreakable confidence in my ability to survive anything. I’d already lost it all on several occasions, and not only had I stayed, but I also thrived. All of this has helped me create proven methods to help people redefine their metrics of success in their personal and professional life, not to be devoured by the 9-5 living someone else's dream, and to find their edge and live to their most significant potential now in both muscle and mindset.
Most importantly, I give them the skills to keep themselves and their families safe on the street and in the ring. This year I was awarded top entrepreneur in my field from "Marquis Who’s Who in America" for making a monumental impact on society and being one of the top leaders in my area.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
There is no greater happiness in life than seeing other people succeed. Seeing thousands of people succeed in my programs and continue to climb the ladder they chose for themselves is my most significant source of joy. This is my greatest accomplishment in business in the last few years.
I needed more funding to open my gym, including the ability to sustain it for more than two months, but I opened it regardless. I had no boxing bags, no name, and no equipment. I have always been one to roll the dice. I had been heavily marketing on social media for two weeks before opening my doors for the first time. I gained 112 recurring memberships in the billing system before day one.
My gym ended its first year as a high 6-figure success, with no business education and no guidance other than books and free seminars I sought out. I pivoted quickly in the pandemic, and with no government help, my brand-new company thrived in a time when our people needed us the most. We kept them supported, heard, and in fighting shape to handle anything the world threw at them.
UnderWraps launched right after the world began to open again after the pandemic. I opened with 50 recurring clients in my first week of sales. They achieved their goals within the first 3–6 months through my easy-to-implement system using compound interest for small wins. The best part is that they have continued to push themselves further and have completed more than they ever thought possible, as almost all of my initial members are still with me one year later—a great start to my newest and most exciting business.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Not sacrificing your health and personal relationships for what you think is for the business's good, we start to believe we have time, time to fix the relationship, time to do the things we dream about, and time to get healthy. The truth is, we do not.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Failure is mandatory. If you're not failing, you're not doing anything. If you're not winning, it's because you're not dying. I’m so successful because I failed more times than most. Never be afraid to start at the bottom. The longer the base of anything, the higher its supported peak; put the work in and minimize your need for instant gratification; play the long game and roll the dice when you can.
- 100 Dirty Reps: The Rinse and Repeat Model Do anything you want to learn in life enough times that it becomes unreasonable for you to suck at it.
- Hire a mentor and fitness coach immediately! Take care of yourself. Every great leader has a mentor, and every coach has a coach. What are you fighting for in your life?
