Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carolyn de Voest, founder of Better Your Best Business Performance Specialists, located in North Vancouver, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the founder of Better Your Best Business Performance Specialists - we are a team of coaches, consultants, and trainers who work with fast-growing entrepreneurs to optimize their leaders, teams, and businesses.
Tell us about yourself
I've always been driven by a purpose to support others with their big dreams or visions, to be at their best in order to show up at their best. I think what got me started on this path was my father and his ability to take an idea and turn it into action. He taught me that anything is possible. This continues to be my motivation day in and day out.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think one of my earliest accomplishments was incorporating my first business at the age of 21. It was called Play Like a Girl, and its mission was to support girls, teenagers, and women to pursue a play-for-life mentality. We did some pretty awesome stuff...rugby, ultimate, football, and white water rafting. This was an early start on the path toward Better Your Best.
Today, my biggest accomplishment is living the life I envisioned for myself 20 years ago. The ability to set my own schedule, decide who I get to work with, what I say yes and no to, and travel as much as I want whenever I want - all of this comes down to the freedom and flexibility that I value.
I am also very proud of the accomplishments that I've helped my clients achieve over the years - starting their businesses, selling their businesses, their champagne moments, creating legacies for next generations — but the truth is, those are their accomplishments...and I've been humbled to be a part of their journeys.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the bigger struggles for entrepreneurs is finding that ideal balance — truly knowing what to say yes or no to and then selling and servicing the work.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Create your team - who do you need on it? Accountants, lawyers, admin support, coaches, consultants, and mentors. Think of the whole picture of folks who can help you get where you want to go.
- Create a one-page plan - keep it simple: who, what, when, where, why, how. Really lock in your purpose, vision, roles, and goals.
- Stay disciplined - return to your plan and your goals regularly. Don't compromise on this - so many people do. Stay consistent.
