Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Caroline Klinger MS, RD, Registered Sports Dietitian, located in Nashville, TN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is an online private practice that provides sports nutrition counseling for elite high school, college, and professional athletes who are seeking to reach optimal performance through nutrition and diet. My primary coaching program, Next-Level Nutrition Academy, gives athletes the nutrition knowledge and skills necessary to reach the next level of athletic performance.
Tell us about yourself
From a young age, I have always had a passion for athletics - whether that be as a competitive dancer, a swimmer, a lacrosse player, or a runner - I have tried my hand at many sports and have always found that being active brings me the most happiness. Athletics and nutrition go hand-in-hand, which is why I discovered that nutrition was a secondary passion of mine while I was in college. I knew I wanted a career that would combine my passion for athletic competition with my love for nutrition - becoming a sports dietitian did just that!
Being an entrepreneur wasn't always a passion of mine. In fact, it was something I wasn't sure that I would be good at. However, I've always believed that pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone is what truly grows you as a professional. My clients are what motivate me every day because they have put their trust in me to help them achieve huge goals that could impact the rest of their lives!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Every time I have a client who successfully completes my program and sees the results of their hard work, it feels like a huge accomplishment!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things for me as a business owner is truly handling the business side of things. With both undergraduate and master's degrees in dietetics & nutrition, business and finance isn't exactly my expertise. Learning how to start, manage, and grow a business has been a huge learning curve for me, and I've had to lean on a lot of outside experts for help.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My first tip for anyone looking to start, run, and grow a business is that you can't let fear hold you back from taking that first step. You have to jump in without fear of failure and embrace whatever is thrown at you! Second, don't be afraid to ask for help. Most business owners don't know a ton about owning a business when they first start. Asking for help allows you to learn, and it increases the number of people on your team wanting you to succeed. Third, success is defined by you and you only. Don't compare your business to someone else's. You define what is successful in your own business.
