Love and Magic - Carmen Hazelton Photography

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carmen Hazelton, Founder of Carmen Hazelton Photography, located in Lyndeborough, NH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a boutique photography business based in beautiful southern New Hampshire in the Monadnock region. I love many different types of photography, from landscapes to portraits to sports to fine art. I photograph outdoors mostly, but I hope to have my own studio someday. I serve my clients by not only capturing their images but by creating professionally printed images ready to be displayed in the spaces where they will be the most impactful in their daily routines. Whether we create a gallery wall or a stunning tabletop display, each session is unique to my client's needs.

Tell us about yourself

I've always taken pictures. It was always a hobby. I dabbled in high school photography courses and really learned through practice. I never considered doing it as a profession until a few years back, I noticed how many family sessions I was doing for friends, and then I decided to create an LLC. I want to create my own hours and systems and be my own boss. I want to teach my children that they don't have to live a life of grinding and hustling and paying bills. I want them to see they can design a beautiful life doing something they love and that there is value in that. My family and friends are my biggest cheerleaders. Their support is what keeps me moving forward when the head trash creeps in.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is applying grace and gratitude to myself as I learn and grow into the business of my dreams. I generally learn things the hard way. Being able to block out the head trash that subconsciously tries to freeze action and productivity has been monumental in my growth and learning as a business owner.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is managing my time. As a business owner, I could work around the clock. I love what I do. But I also love my family and friends and life outside of my business, so it is important to create a balance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Do it! Imperfect action is better than non-action. As entrepreneurs, we are allowed to change and grow. Where we start is not where we stay, so start. Do not compare yourself. Comparison is a thief of joy. Design your business for what works for you and your life, not what anybody else is doing.
