Makeup Made Easy - Carlucce

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carla McKean, owner of Carlucce Inc., located in Hinsdale, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Carlucce is my cosmetic line, and the hero product I created is Cache CreamTM. It's an all-in-one concealer, primer, and foundation. I think of it as a new category within makeup. It's gender-neutral and for the person who wants to show his or her natural beauty. It's makeup with benefits because it includes ONLY natural ingredients that are good for your skin (e.g., hydrating and naturally moisturizing) while giving you a medium to full coverage look. It is for most skin types and all ages. Consumers have had to choose between good coverage/bad ingredients or bad coverage/better ingredients. With Cache Cream, you get the best ingredients with great coverage. It's also vegan, which no other makeup on the market currently is (although some claim to be).

Tell us about yourself

I developed these products for myself. As a teenager, I participated in beauty pageants. I learned to pay tremendous attention to what food I put in my body, yet no one discussed what was in the makeup we put on our faces. I started learning about ingredients and making my own makeup. It's evolved over the past 15 years into Cache CreamTM. I began using

It is on my clients for TV/Film, and after the enthused feedback and repeated requests, I've brought it to market. My newborn daughter motivates me every day. To live a clean lifestyle that can give her the best benefits is of the utmost importance.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a makeup artist with no background in business, I have completely self-funded my dream and made it come true. I've learned every aspect of creating a business, from social media to creating financials, pitching the product to stores, branding, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, etc.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being emotionally attached is hard. When people don't see what you see, it's hard. But rejection pushes me further.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be nice to everyone you meet because you never know how they can circle back into your life.
  2. Don't always pay people to do things you don't know how to do. Figure it out so that you know every aspect of your business.
  3. Stay humble.
