Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Caren Magill, Certified ADHD Life Coach & Wellbeing Expert based in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a certified life coach that helps driven, ambitious women who struggle with focus, procrastination, and follow-through shift from a distraction into action. I have ADHD, and so do many of my clients, but I find that all women struggle with this at some point in their lives and careers.

Tell us about yourself

I was diagnosed with ADHD at the young age of 52! Once I received my diagnosis, I gave myself some time to grieve what could have been if I had known this about myself much earlier. Then I learned everything I could about neurodiversity and how to thrive with it.

I had been coaching women in fitness and wellness for many years before I was diagnosed, so moving into ADHD coaching was my natural next step. I consider this work my "life's purpose."

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having the honor of working with other women (and some men) who struggle with the same things as I do - imposter syndrome, disorganization, and rejection sensitivity. The fact that my clients trust me with their deepest vulnerabilities is an honor for me. It's also healing to know that you're not alone regarding limiting thoughts.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I wear every single hat in the business! I'm the marketer, the web developer, the social media manager, the accountant, and the coach! That said, I am at my best when I work alone. I have no desire to manage a team, so I've been very intentional about setting up systems that support how I like to work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get clear on why you want to start a business. Entrepreneurship is not easy, and if you're in it for the money, there's a greater than 50% chance that you will be disappointed (because more than 50% of businesses fail in the first two years). However, if you have a profound connection to your "why," then the purpose of your business will pull you through the hard days.
  2. Create a business that supports the way you want to work. There's no one-size-fits-all in entrepreneurship. If you create a company based on what you see people around you doing without being clear on what's important to you, you might build a business you hate. I've been there, and that's no fun!
  3. Have the proper support in place! That might mean having enough money to sustain you for two years or having a supportive spouse who will watch the kids while you work on your side hustle. It's going to be different for everyone. Still, the main reason why people fail in entrepreneurship is that they lack the time, money, and or purpose to follow through.
