Education is a Life-long Process - Care in training
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elaine Burston, Managing Director of Care in training CIC, located in London, United Kingdom.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Care in Training CIC is a non-profit community interest company offering affordable accredited qualifications in nutrition, health, and lifestyle sciences. We are committed to advancing the cause of lifelong learning and health equity and are dedicated to improving individuals' health and well-being through accessible, high-quality public health qualifications. All our courses are validated by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH).
Tell us about yourself
Following a near on 30-year career as a sports therapist teacher, nutritionist and counsellor in both the voluntary and private sectors and a wide range of settings from schools and colleges to local authorities and community projects, I was burned out! I wanted more independence and autonomy in my work. I was also becoming concerned about decreasing opportunities for adults to return to education or employment following a break or even to change careers or develop their professional skills. This coupled with my passion for teaching and public health, I decided to start my own business.
One of my biggest motivations for each day is the students I have the opportunity to teach. Their diversity and unique backgrounds always inspire and keep me engaged in my work. Additionally, I am motivated by the opportunity to work with a highly respected and professional organization like the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH). This organization aligns with my own values and mission, which helps me to stay focused and motivated in my role.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say getting the business up and running from scratch with no capital. This includes building a website and a virtual learning platform.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest challenge for me has been marketing my business. While I am confident in the quality of my products and services, marketing is not my area of expertise. I have had to learn and adapt in this area, which has been difficult at times, but I am constantly working on improving my marketing skills and finding new ways to promote my business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a clear vision, a plan, and a passion for what you want to achieve. It's important to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with your business and how you plan to get there; the passion will keep you going.
- Be willing to keep learning and adapting. The business world is constantly changing, and you need to stay up-to-date with the latest developments in your product or service.
- Establish some sources of support, such as networking with other business owners, getting advice from mentors, or seeking out some business start-up training sessions.
