Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Zachary Benau, Co-Founder of Captain Kicks, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a children's enrichment company that specializes in soccer for children ages 2–10. Captain Kicks isn’t only about teaching soccer skills to kids. It’s also about having fun and doing it in a non-competitive, educational environment.
We teach the values of a true captain, someone that listens and helps others. Plus, all our classes can be run at a location chosen by you! We work directly with the schools and parks to set up our classes.
Tell us about yourself
I have always worked with children, ever since college when I went home and worked at my local summer camp, so it has always been a passion of mine. When COVID hit, I knew there was an opportunity in the market with everything shut down as far as camps, schools, etc., so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to be first in line when things started to open back up again.
It is so easy to be motivated by what I am doing because I know we are teaching more than just soccer. We are making a difference in children's lives. We are setting the foundation of being a good friend and learning the values of sportsmanship. I love what I do!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is creating something from scratch that people now love. Soccer and enrichment are nothing new, but my business partners and I created a brand. We always like to say we run our business like a mom-and-pop shop, but we operate like a big business. We hope that you are getting the best of both worlds when you are with Captain Kicks.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It is hard to take a step back as the owner of a business. I have to remember to put my phone down and enjoy time with my family, and that the business will still be there in the morning. I have two young children that I want to spend as much time with as possible.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
See if there is a need for your business and if there is a market for it. If you are passionate about it, then go for it! It doesn't have to be perfect when you first start, and it is okay to take baby steps along the way. Don't rush the process.
