Relax, Recover, Reconnect - Capitol Floats Auburn
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hailey Kleinhans, Owner of Capitol Floats Auburn, located in Auburn, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a float tank center offering floating, massage, and infrared sauna. Floating is a practice of deep rest, where the client floats effortlessly in a bath of body-temperature water and dissolved Epsom salt - similar to the dead sea, the 'floater' floats effortlessly on the surface, in an environment restricted of external stimuli - in this environment, our clients are able to deepen meditation, problem solve, tap into their inner voice and true potential and to explore realms of their minds that are difficult to access in our normal busy, distraction-filled world.
Our clients are those who are seeking deep rest, relief from fatigue, anxiety, and/or depression, and parents who need a break from their kids :) Those who are in spaces of transition, athletes, artists, and entrepreneurs. We provide a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment to explore individual potential.
Tell us about yourself
I found floating in 2016 and haven't looked back since. I had the opportunity to work at a float center in an entry-level position and worked my way up to manager - and found that I just wanted more - I approached the owner of the float center I managed and told him I'd like to open a sister location to his center in my hometown because I thought the people who lived in my home community would love and benefit from the float practice - three years after that conversation, the doors to Capitol Floats Auburn opened.
I am motivated by the positive outcomes floating has on my community - I love that I offer something uniquely suited to support people in their personal transformation journey, and that motivates me to continue. I love that I get to be creative and to follow any and all weird ideas that I have to get people in the door and to make floating accessible.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Opening during 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic and being successful despite tremendous odds against us.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The mental space owning a business takes up in my mind. It's a constant practice of retraining my mind to focus on being present and not get constantly caught up. I could work 24/7 on my business, but it's really important for me to take intentional space away from it - mentally and physically - so that I don't get burnt out. Luckily, the float tanks are an excellent tool for this, and I am grateful for my other rituals and practices that keep me present and grounded.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Don't be intimidated by your lack of knowledge - and don't be overly confident in your understanding - starting a business is a huge learning curve, and naiveté is a strength, not a weakness - being naive means you are not defeated too soon; and you stay open to guidance.
Running a business isn't a one-woman (or man) show - having a team that makes you feel supported and able to relax is a big deal - find people who don't stress you out and give them responsibilities so that you can focus (or figure out) what you're really good at and enjoy doing. Learn to trust people and let go a little bit so they can shine and take you to new heights.
Growing a business is all about being courageous to try new things and to push yourself - so create your own formula and try a lot of different things
if you have a strong team that runs the day-to-day, you'll have more space to try a lot of different things to see what works - and don't get too attached because a formula works until it doesn't, and it's important to know when to pivot and when to stick it out.
