What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m in the business of making candles! My design is minimal and classic, and I’m obsessed with the process of creating gorgeous candles that make homes cozy and inviting. My customers share the same love for candlelight and gently scented candles as I do. They, too, enjoy the ambiance that candles bring.

Tell us about yourself

After getting frustrated with my sensitivity to overpowering scented candles, I decided to investigate and find out what was giving me such bad headaches. I learned about all the toxins in scented candles and began to explore how to make my own. After lots of research and experimenting in my kitchen, I launched Canyon Candle Co.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So far, my biggest business accomplishment is becoming a recognized candle brand in my community. In only two years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many local businesses both in their corporate gifting as well as retailers that I love and admire. I’m very proud of my retailers and look forward to growing this stockist.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Sometimes I feel that being a small business owner is very isolating, and balancing between my two little girls and the demands of a new brand can be challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Grow slow and steady.
  2. Keep costs as low as you can in the beginning.
  3. Use your community resources, friends, and family as much as possible. Tell everyone your ideas and see how they can guide you with their experience and knowledge
