Non-Irritating, Non-Toxic Haircare - CANE Beauty
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Candace Nall, co-founder of CANE Beauty, located in Chesterfield, MO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
CANE Beauty is a haircare brand that focuses on non-irritating, clean haircare products that promote scalp health for Black Women. Black Women are exposed to more scalp damaging ingredients in their hair routine than any other group. We seek to provide Black Women with hair care products that protect their sensitive, eczema-prone skin while meeting the unique needs of their hair.
Tell us about yourself
I wear many hats. I am a physician, an entrepreneur, and a mom. St. Louis is home, but I love to travel and experience new things. I am also a Black Woman frustrated with the beauty haircare space. I have sensitive skin, and I like to wear my hair naturally. I was constantly disappointed with hair products that were labeled “natural,” “vegan,” or “free” but still contained questionable ingredients or irritated my scalp, or just did not meet the needs of my hair.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment was using my medical training to apply scientific principles to formulate scalp products that help Black Women avoid scalp irritation and grow healthier hair. Plus, sharing it with other skin experts who often do not study skin color.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Finding that work-life balance. As a full-time physician working in the ER, it is hard to find time to work on CANE Beauty, meet the demands of CANE Beauty and be a present mom to my teenage son. I am extremely thankful to have a great support system in place to help me balance it all.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- My #1 tip is just to get started. Many people have great ideas that are only just. You do not have to have everything figured out right away; you just have to start.
- My #2 tip is to give yourself grace. It is not going to be perfect. You will make mistakes. There will always be things you wish you had done differently. Things will not always go as planned. Do not beat yourself up or give up. Just keep moving forward.
- My last tip is to stay open to learning new skills. You can save your company money if you learn to perform tasks such as file your own sales tax, manage your own social media, or design your own ads. There are so many how-to videos and free resources online, so do not be afraid to learn how to do whatever your company needs.
