Light One, For the Culture - Candles 4 the Culture

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Demetria Fitzgerald, founder of Candles 4 the Culture, located in Mableton, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Candles 4 the Culture was created to celebrate the symbols unique to Black culture. From the songs that many of us can recite word for word to the films that we've watched time and time again, C4C represents the familiarity within our community. The scent of each candle was designed to suit the themes that we all know and love. We encourage you to light a candle and reminisce about the beautiful things that make us uniquely special.

Tell us about yourself

In addition to being a wife and mom of three, I'm also a natural maker. I come from a family of very creative people, so the inclination to make things is something I believe that I inherited. When I enjoy something, I often try to make it myself. If I'm good at it, and other people find value in it, then it becomes a business opportunity. That's how I started a candle business. Each day, I'm motivated by unmet potential. Though we've had a fair amount of success in just under three years, there's still so much more to achieve.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was opening our brick-and-mortar retail shop. After just one year of e-commerce sales, we opened for business at the height of the pandemic. That's something that I'm both grateful for and proud of.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is the constant decision-making. When you work for someone else, you take direction from your superiors. While it may seem ideal to be the primary decision-maker, it can be exhausting. Decision fatigue is real.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you have a business idea, go for it! Don't overthink your way out of something that could change your life and/or the lives of others.
  2. Don't be afraid of failure. Failing does not diminish your worth. The most successful people often have experienced the most failures.
  3. Don't expect overnight success. Be willing to put in the time and effort it takes to grow a successful business.
