Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Candice Montgomery, owner of Candice Montgomery LLC., located in Burleson, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help new and aspiring entrepreneurs master business basics so they can achieve personal and financial freedom. Women entrepreneurs aged 22-35 and 35-45.

Tell us about yourself

Funny story, when I was 22, my husband looked at me and said, "let's open up our own air conditioning business." Normally people may freak out, but I loved it and dove right in! (P.S. Yes, this was before google - and I didn't have any business friends!) What motivates me is helping others start their business, so they do not have to struggle in the beginning as we did! I love being able to walk step by step with them as they embark on their new journey!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I actually have two! The first was being in business and working with my husband every day for the past 25 years - a hard but beautiful gift! The second and one I will always remember: the day all three businesses had zero debt, and we said no more debt! It changed the way I think about business and how we run and operate!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is delegating tasks. After it has only been you, you will have a certain way of doing things. But there comes a time when you have to say I need to step back from XYZ so I can focus on ABC. Realizing this and then handing it off to someone else really puts you to the test: trusting somebody with your "baby" and hoping they see your vision and have the same hard work ethic as you is hard!! But trust me, when you find the right person, it relieves so much pressure and truly lets you step back and be a CEO!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure everything legal is in place (taxes, licenses, etc.).
  2. Create systems and automate tasks - this will help you run and grow your business and be able to delegate tasks when the time comes.
  3. Don't be intimated to get a coach or a mentor! They truly are a blessing! You are not meant to do it all alone!
