Hand-crafted at Every Step - Candelaria

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristina Thayer, owner of Candelaria, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Candelaria - 100% female-owned and operated - specializing in soy candles! Our small batch candles are hand-poured by our team in sunny Denver, Colorado, and our 100% natural soy & beeswax candles are a nod to the natural pace of nature and the spirit of the lovingly hand-crafted.

Tell us about yourself

Candelaria has a strong appreciation for artisanal, and we practice the art of 'hand-crafted' at every step. Our wax melter is the only machine we use in the entire candle-making process!

On a more abstract level, Candelaria is ultimately inspired by the earth's rocks, gems, and minerals and the powerful uniqueness that they each provide. We are motivated by creating something beautiful, functional, and exciting.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

COVID-19 was a life-changing event for every human on the planet, but I feel such pride for being able to see ourselves out of the pandemic. As a business owner, I did whatever it took to survive and come out even stronger. I think it sounds like somewhat of a cliche at this point, but my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is to be able to say that we made it out.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You are forced to wear many hats - all the hats when you are a small business owner. For me, I struggle to find reliable staff, and as a reflection of myself, I find it hard to let some of the duties go. When you build something from the ground pebble upwards, it means you've had a hand in everything the business has gone through. Inviting other people to help make the business grow and succeed is something I continue to struggle with.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I would advise budding businesses to try to be self-funded, be prepared to get your hands REALLY dirty, and go in with 2000% passion. Starting your business is very hard work, and there are many days it will not feel worth it - but if you go into it with all the passion in your heart, every day will feel rewarding, and you'll always understand what you are working for.
