Badges & Booze - Camp Hoo-Ha
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melanie Mckay, founder of Camp Hoo-Ha, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Camp Hoo-Ha, which is a skill-building club for women. (This Girl Guides with wine.) My customers are women between 20 and 65 who are looking to learn, meet friends and have a lot of fun.
Tell us about yourself
I started working on the business in 2017 when my freelance work slowed down during the oil recession. I realized that I was ready for a creative reboot and also needed more fun in my own life. I'm motivated to lead campers every day, especially through COVID, because I know how badly women need connection and fun. It's an honor to help support them.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment for sure is surviving COVID and building a larger, more robust community throughout the pandemic. Every day was a battle, but by tapping into the needs of compers, I have been able to grow the business and forge a new path.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for me right now is definitely the uncertainty. Planning and canceling events is no fun.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be ruthless in pursuing a business and brand that really taps into an emotional need.
- Listen to your customers.
- Surround yourself with good people who believe in you.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I think it's important to know what drives you - profile, passion, profit, or process. Once you figure that out, it's easier to figure out your business.
