Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Camille Wright Felton, owner of Category 5 Photography, LLC, located in Kennesaw, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a headshot photographer. My customers are people who need to improve the images they share online for their social media profiles, business websites, and personal profiles.

Tell us about yourself

Photography started out as a hobby for me. Then I took classes to learn more about it. I eventually earned a Digital Photography Certificate from Emory University's evening program. I really enjoy creating images that help people see themselves the way they want the world to see them. So many people feel like they're not good on camera when the real problem is they haven't had the right person to coach them through the process. It's exciting to help people change their mindset about their image.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Relaunching my business last year. I had stepped away from photography for a few years for several reasons. I decided it was time to get back to it and to try to build my business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, it's the uncertainty. Doing something that works one week that doesn't the next is difficult. Finding the best practices for my businesses but being ready to adjust is challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research everything, from the field you want to get into to the type of clients you want to work with. You need to know what you're getting into.
  2. Put systems in place. Find a CRM you like, a mail system that works for you, and a website builder you like before you reach out to clients. Having those in place will make things run smoothly for you and your clients.
  3. Be ready to make changes if something doesn't work.
