Crafting Compelling Converting Content - Cameron Cashman
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cameron Cashman, based in Amherst, NH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
As a freelance content writer, my customers are anyone looking for clear, concise messaging. I've written blog posts, YouTube scripts, web and marketing copy, and even fictional screenplays.
Tell us about yourself
I've always loved writing and storytelling. I've been doing it for so long that it comes very naturally to me. But for most of my life, I was under the impression that making a living as a professional writer was an unachievable fantasy.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
With more people turning to online contract work recently, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I realized that I could turn my passion for writing into a freelance business. Not only could I finally do what I love, but I could set my own work terms and schedule. (This is especially important when you play as many video games and watch as many movies as I do...)
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As someone with ADHD, I constantly struggle with self-discipline. The freedom I have is a double-edged sword - on the one hand, I'm much more enthusiastic about the work that I do because I have more control over when and where I do it. Conversely, it can be hard to sit down and work when I could easily choose to play any day of the week. This is a struggle for any independent business owner, but especially so for those of us.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do as much research as possible before starting any new endeavor. Go beyond a quick Google search (those first ten results aren't always the best...) Even better, look for online communities of real people with real experiences - they'll already know what works and what doesn't.
