Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tim Westbrook, CEO of Camelback Recovery, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We save lives! We provide treatment for alcoholism, drug addiction, and mental illness.
Tell us about yourself
I am in the business of helping people recover from substance use disorders and process addictions.
I was born and raised in Southern California and spent my teen years in Oxnard, California. I attended the University of California, Davis, where I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Business. Most of my post-college years were spent in the San Francisco Bay Area until I moved to Arizona in 2006.
Struggles with substance addiction eventually began to affect every area of my life. By March of 2011, I hit my bottom and became willing to go to any lengths to get and stay sober. Through my journey out of addiction and in recovery, I bring experience and strength. I hope for the man who wants lifelong sobriety. My passion for health and fitness, long-term sobriety, and changing lives is not only what inspired me to open Camelback Recovery but accounts for Camelback's high success rate.
Today, I held board positions for several non-profits. I actively work in a 12-Step program, and I am well connected with the recovery community. I am also an Ironman and an avid yogi. In the interest of furthering my education and becoming a better tool for Camelback Recovery, I obtained my Master's of Science in Addiction Counseling at Grand Canyon University in 2016. My recovery has led me to live a happy, useful and whole life in sobriety.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My sobriety date is 3/8/2011. After losing my business in 2013, I found myself broke and without a job. That was when the thought of starting a sober living business came to me. For the first couple of years, I was the house manager, I did business development and admissions, I was in school getting my Master's in Addiction Counseling, and I drove for Uber on the side to make enough money to pay my bills. Here we are eight years later, and I have four sober living homes (3 of which I own). We have helped hundreds if not thousands of people get clean and sober, and now we are in the process of opening an outpatient treatment center.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Obtaining financing when times are tough and finding good employees.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
You must be all in. You must be willing to go to any lengths if you want to succeed. You must be willing to fail, but don't give up. You MUST be passionate about the product or service you are going to provide because you will want to quit, and it needs to be worth it for you.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
