Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Josie Rudderham, co-owner of Cake and Loaf Bakery, located in Hamilton, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Cake and Loaf Bakery is a small from-scratch neighbourhood bakery in Hamilton, Ontario. We are passionate advocates for a living wage and believe in people over profit. We are trying to build a better world, one baked good at a time. We make delicious and creative twists on modern classics as well as good old-fashioned comfort food.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Until recently, we would have said we are most proud that we are able to pay all our employees a living wage. That took a few years, and we worked really hard to reach that goal. But, we are now proud to be able to share that we have been working on a cookbook that comes out in April. Nickey and I worked incredibly hard to get it all together, from the photos to the recipes, and we are so proud of it.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a business owner can be the weight of responsibilities. It helps so much to reach out to other small business owners to know you aren't alone.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Make sure you are truly passionate about your product. It's easy to sell things you believe in. Look for support in your small business communities to help ease the stress. Collaboration over competition will help you keep things meaningful. Really take the time for self-care, especially in today's climate. Eat, move your body and get sleep!
