Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Greg Lomason, Founder and CEO of Byron James Fitness, located in Southfield, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My name is Greg Lomason, and I am the Founder of Byron James Fitness, a Detroit-based company that provides, One-on-One fitness training, Fitness Apparel, and Home Gym Equipment to those in sports and military service. Since 2013, Byron James Fitness has consistently excelled at bringing quality and science-based results to over 20,000 people like you.

Tell us about yourself

That's a good question. I wish I had a short answer for it, but I don't. Growing up, my family didn't have a lot. We were broke and quite possibly on the poverty line. My parents worked hard, and my dad, who my business is named after, worked three jobs or more for as long as I can remember. He was always doing something and found a solution to his problems on the farm. He also had eight children and a wife to support. His work ethic inspired me to name my business after him. It's that work ethic I try to instill through my videos and workouts and throughout my business. However, I guess the inspiration for becoming an entrepreneur is that it's the only job that feels like it fits. It's just who I am.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Since starting my business, the most memorable thing I've done is help the sheer amount of people I have to achieve their goals. I've worked with everyone, and 98% of the time, we reach the goals they set out to accomplish. I've worked with ages 16-95, junior high to professional athletes, service members to special forces, and janitors to CEOs. I've worked with people suffering from Parkinson's, Huntington's, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, pre-rehab, post-rehab, cancer, diabetes, and everyone in between. Being able to design and implement fitness programs for all these people, getting to know them personally, and even calling them friends is possibly my most significant accomplishment and blessing.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

My biggest challenge today as a business owner is the same challenge from 10 years ago: Marketing, Funding, and Networking. I still haven't overcome it as a fully independent business, and I'm still relentlessly pursuing that knowledge. I have some plans already in motion, and I will continue to work on them and be fluid in execution until my hard work pays off. I've had bouts of extreme success over the last ten years and some pretty epic failures. However, I believe these next 5-10 years of relentless pursuit in the development of a community and obtaining my Ph.D. in Physical Therapy will make a difference.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find your reason why and let its voice be the loudest one in your head.
  2. Take heed of what others say and their advice, but let your why to be your voice of reason.
  3. Break your business down to the bare essentials it needs to be viable, get those pieces to work on their own, make a plan to put them together, and start doing the work.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Regarding legacy, I'd like to leave the world a better place than when I found it. I want to impact people's lives in a truly impactful and beneficial way. I want to change how they perceive what's possible for themselves and help them make easy and fun decisions to change their lives and health. I want to incorporate fitness in ways other people have never imagined and truly give others fitness programs that work for lifetimes. I'm sick of the industry's gimmicks, fad diets, marketing schemes, false information, and, to be blunt, all the bullshit. The industry has gotten to be too much about making money. The integrity of helping people to help has been put to the wayside. I want the world to know that there is a company that genuinely cares about you as an individual, as a client, and as a fellow human being, and together we can get you wherever you want to be with teamwork. Not only that, but I want to give you the tools you need to be successful (Mental, Muscular, Nutrition, and Flexibility)
