Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marchelle McKenzie, owner of Butter and Spice, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Butter and Spice, and we specialize in gourmet brownies and baked goods. We bring them right to your front door. We focus mainly on GTA deliveries as we are based in Toronto.

Tell us about yourself

My love for baking has followed me since her Easy Bake Oven delicacies at age five. For years I have educated myself on the finest baking techniques, landing a high school internship at the Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts and earning an associate’s degree at the Culinary Institute of America. I further refined my skills in some of the premier kitchens of New York City (Eleven Madison Park) and London (Restaurant Story, Lily Vanilli, Betony, Fabrique). I am motivated each by the amount of passion I have for baking and pastry.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment would have to be being featured on CTV News in December 2021.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing would be dealing with the unknowns and scaling the business gradually. Some days it feels like it is scaling at its own rate.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make a business plan.
  2. Do your market research.
  3. Make sure you LOVE what you will be selling/ providing.
