Make Life Easier With a Busy Baby - Busy Baby

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Beth Fynbo, Founder of Busy Baby, located in Oronoco, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We create products that make life easier with a Busy Baby! It all started with the Busy Baby Mat, the first-ever suction silicone placemat that allows you to attach your baby's favorite items to the mat with our patented tether system. Our customers are not only new parents but grandparents and friends who want to give the BEST Baby Shower Gift EVER!

Tell us about yourself

I spent ten years in the US Army and then another ten years getting college degrees and working corporate jobs. Finally, at the age of 40, I started my family and came up with the idea for the Busy Baby Mat. After appearing on ABC's hit show Shark Tank, I convinced my brother to quit his job and join me at Busy Baby.

We are motivated to keep creating more products that make life easier with a baby while showing our kids (we have six kids combined) how you can build your own business and work hard to reach your own goals on your own terms.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment is bringing my idea to life and having the persistence or tenacity to take it to market and continue to grow the brand. If I had known how hard it was going to be, I might not have actually done it! I'm proud that I kept driving forward!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Since I started this business with NO EXPERIENCE doing any of the things needed to start and build a product-based business, the hardest part is not knowing what I don't know. I'm constantly learning new things. Just when I think I've reached a new learning milestone and things will get easier, a new thing that I need to learn pops up!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you want to start a business, interview strangers who you think might be your target audience and see if they would support your business. Your friends and family will always be nicer to you than a complete stranger. Make sure there is a demand for what you want to offer.
  2. If you have a product invention/idea, do a patent search to make sure someone else doesn't already own the rights to that idea/design. You can start on Google Patents, but you should hire someone to do a professional patent search before spending any money on development.
  3. Once you start, keep taking the next best step. Even if you have no clue what you are doing (like me in the first three years of my business), if you do the next best thing with what you have, where you are at, you will continue to move forward. One day you'll look back in awe of how far you have come. Trust me!
