Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cheri Ruskus, Founder of Business Victories, located in Longmont, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Business Victories is a business coaching and training company. Our customers are primarily women entrepreneurs who want to grow their business and at the same time have time for all the other important pieces of their lives. In addition to one-on-one coaching, we provide online coaching programs and, new for 2023, a paper business planner that works in conjunction with our online programs. We call it the Bright Shiny Object (BSO) Grow Planner. I also give motivational talks on leadership and the importance of creating systems in your business, from marketing to financial planning.

Tell us about yourself

I became an entrepreneur in my 20s and never looked back. After selling the first business that I owned and operated for 16 years, I became a Business Coach. My purpose then, which continues today 22 years later, is to assist women entrepreneurs to not struggle but to, in fact, enjoy the ride. Because no one should feel stuck in their business. A strong small lifestyle business should allow a woman to have her business work around her life versus her life working around the business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Finding multiple revenue streams to ensure growth both financially and mentally. Doing the same thing over and over can get mundane and does not promote innovation or growth. I have written two books, The Victory Letters - Inspiration for the Human Race and Victory One Moment at a Time - Unlocking the Power of the Mastermind. I assisted thousands of entrepreneurs through my one-to-one coaching, masterminds, workshops, and training. Continue to be in the game after 22 years.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The third book I am currently writing talks about the way that we need to watch out for the bright shiny objects coming at us as business owners. As entrepreneurs, we don't lack ideas; we usually have way too many. Fear and lack of money can be the top two things that can trip us and make us lose focus by chasing after the wrong bright shiny objects. The key is planning, systems, and being true to keeping your mindset strong. I believe in not only having a planner to guide you but a morning practice every day. Something I call Morning Momentum to keep your mind strong.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Remember to keep planning and write your plan down to keep you from chasing after the swirl of new ideas coming your way.
  2. Keep your mindset strong by hanging out with people who empower you.
  3. Have a coach (even as a coach, I have a coach) by your side to assist you in keeping accountable, staying true to your dreams, and getting the help you need when you need it.
