Lessons from High-Performing Entrepreneurs - Business M.O.

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hanna Hasl-Kelchner, Founder of Business M.O., LLC, located in Durham, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help executives, managers, and entrepreneurs build healthier, more productive business cultures by honing their leadership skills, supporting their leadership development, and identifying issues hiding in plain view that matter to their bottom line. It's why I created the Business Confidential Now podcast (available wherever podcasts are found).

Tell us about yourself

I grew up in an entrepreneurial family and learned long ago that building healthier business cultures is the secret to happier employees and more robust bottom lines. Getting there without sacrificing one for the other is the challenge and unlocking greater employee engagement through more effective leadership is the key. I bring a unique perspective to the table due to my decades of experience bridging the gap between business and law as a trusted advisor to influential decision-makers ranging from startups to the S&P 500, Big Tobacco, and the White House.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It's that glint of recognition in a client's eye that says, "Yeah, I get it, and I'm going to do that." It tells me that they're learning and growing professionally. You can create all the products and services in the world that you want, but if it doesn't connect with people, it's pretty useless.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's tough to pick just one challenge because business owners are constantly juggling many things. For solopreneurs, developing systems and allowing others to take responsibility can be hard because your business is "your baby." But you can't grow if you can't let go. Knowing when and how to do that is the key, and it could take several attempts before you get it right.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be growth-minded, have a good mentor and/or kitchen cabinet who can offer advice and point you to resources (take time to learn).
  2. Make time to work ON your business instead of only IN your business, decide on what success looks like for you and then figure out what steps you need to take to get there, and revisit your plan at least once a year.
  3. Don't take rejection personally - it's part of the process and an opportunity to learn.
