Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chelsea Burdick, owner of Burd Physical Therapy, located in Rochester, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
In 2019, I opened a private practice Physical Therapy office. I love that I can help a wide variety of people with a wide array of impairments. We strive to be different from other facilities, where we focus on individualized one-on-one attention during the physical therapy session. I believe that if you dedicate more time to each patient during the sessions, their treatment will overall be more effective, and they will reach their goals quicker.
Tell us about yourself
After I graduated college, I gained experience working in a variety of settings, including skilled nursing, home care, and neuro rehab. I have always had a passion for outpatient physical therapy. However, in other PT outpatient clinics, the therapist is often seeing many patients at the same time. The goal is to see as many people as you can in a day. I wanted to change the way patients viewed physical therapy and focus on a more patient-centered approach to rehab. I am motivated to help people achieve their personal goals each and every day. It is very rewarding being able to help people, even in the smallest ways.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We have grown immensely in the last three years. It has been a stressful but exciting time. I have since hired three very skilled Physical Therapists to work alongside with. I am proud of the business we have created and am elated to hear how much we have been able to help people in this community. I love seeing the positive reviews on Facebook and Google and, more importantly, being able to hear patient success stories directly from the source. Many of our patients return for other impairments or even send their closest friends, family, and colleagues our way, which is a true testament to their positive experience here.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I am definitely a people pleaser, so it is hard sometimes to grasp the fact that I cannot make every single person happy. Working in direct patient care has its challenging moments. We are dealing with not only physical impairments but a great deal of emotional and psychological trauma as well. We all strive to go out of our way to help people, but sometimes with insurance restrictions, we are only able to do so much.

- Always be a student. Keep asking questions and never stop trying to be the best at whatever it is you do.
